Rail-Trails

Steeped in history, these converted railway beds connect communities throughout Washington County and beyond. While the Washington County portion of the Panhandle Trail offers a paved asphalt surface, the Montour Trail's smooth surface of crushed limestone is often preferred by runners. Both rail-trails are ideal for all forms of non-motorized use: bicycling, walking, running, cross-country skiing, dog-walking, and nature appreciation. Mon River Trail

The Monongahela River slips gracefully through the hills of the Allegheny Plateau in Southeastern Washington County. Known colloquially as "the Mon," the river flows north 129 miles from the confluence of the West Fork and Tygart Valley Rivers in Fairmont, West Virginia to meet with the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

From Millsboro to Elrama, Washington County boasts approximately 40 miles of frontage along the river's middle section (Mid Mon). The Mid Mon is floatable year-round and offers visitors many dining and entertainment experiences. Along the way is The Monongahela Aquatorium, one of the country’s only outdoor waterside aquatoriums, which hosts a series of summer concerts, fireworks and more exciting events.

Walking/Hiking Trails

Some of the county's best hiking trails can be found at Hillman State Park, Mingo Creek County Park and Cross Creek County Park. If it's just an afternoon stroll you're after, plan a family picnic at any of these community parks below and enjoy the playgrounds and walking trails. In addition to a playground, tennis, deck hockey and basketball courts, Cecil Township Park's walking trail even connects to the Montour Trail. You'll find some of the most unique playgrounds in the area at Mingo Creek County Park, and you'll even discover a bicycle obstacle course at Cross Creek County Park.
